- Recounting his days at Afya House, Nakhumicha said the 56-day doctors' strike earlier this year tarnished his legacy in the Ministry, but now he says he considered it as a challenge to economic growth

Former Minister of Health Susan Nakhumicha has reflected on her time serving two months after being shown the door.
Nakhumicha returned to Afya House on Thursday, August 29, to officially hand over the ministry to his successor Debora Mulongo.
Speaking to journalists, the former Minister marveled at some of the achievements that the Ministry of Health registered under him, despite the challenges.
However, he appreciated the challenges that came with the work, and regretted that, at some point, the steps taken would be overshadowed by the mistakes recorded there, those involved ending up bearing a heavy burden.
“There is always room for improvement when you have a role in front of you. There are things we could have done better, maybe under the circumstances. I want to consider it as part of the job. Even when you think you are doing well, the results are unexpected,” he said.
Nakhumicha noted that the 56-day doctors' strike earlier this year was the biggest challenge in his career when he assumed power in October 2022.
The minister revealed that it often pained him to see patients suffering in hospitals while doctors went on strike to gather on the streets to complain about their rights.
“I am very sorry for the period when the doctors were on strike, it was a very difficult time for us as a Ministry. Seeing that there are patients who need care and the doctors are not there for them, I must say that is one of the things. That was a very low time for me when I was working here, but we still worked as a team and managed the situation as bad as it was,” he said.
