Nairobi- President William Ruto is expected to launch Raila Odinga's bid to become the chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Several leaders of the countries of the East African Community are expected to attend the event which will be held at the White House Nairobi.
Which presidents are expected to attend Raila Odinga's event
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu and her South Sudan counterpart Salva Kiir have already arrived in the country before the launch.
On Monday, August 26, Trade Minister Salim Mvurya received Kiir at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

“The President of South Sudan HE Salva Kiir Mayardit and the Chairman of the EAC are in the country for the Inauguration of the Candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission in the country Kenya Tuesday, August 27, 2024. He was received at JKIA by Hon. Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary. , Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry,” Mvurya said.
Mvurya pointed out that the President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni will also attend the event.
“Yoweri Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda and Hon Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, are expected to attend,” he added.
The former president of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete and the former president of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo are among the guests who arrived at the Nairobi Palace.
The ODM leader will be fighting for the seat, and several candidates from the region are competing, including Vincent Meriton of Seychelles and Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti.
Did Fawzia Adam approve Raila Odinga's request?
As previously reported, the support of Fawzia Adam strengthened the position of Raila to be the next chairman of the African Union Commission.
The former Somali foreign minister announced his intention in March but called it quits months later. He met Raila in Nairobi on Friday, August 9.
It was in their meeting that he announced his support for the long-time leader of the opposition in Kenya.
What else do you need to know about Raila Odinga's AU bid?
- ODM leader Raila Odinga gave a list of African presidents who had openly supported his aspirations for the continent.
- The veteran Kenyan politician officially presented his credentials before voting in February next year.
- The position of AUC chairman will become vacant in 2025 following the end of Moussa Faki's second and final term.
- The US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, endorsed the leader of the United Declaration for the AUC seat.
