Why was Okiya Omtatah attacked?
In photos that have emerged recently, Omtatah revealed that he has had 10 false teeth affixed due to previous assaults and severe head injuries, all due to his refusal to accept bribes to end his opposition to government decisions.
“I don't have 10 teeth. The ones I have now are fake. They were dropped because I refused a KSh 9 million bribe. My skull has been broken twice but we must remain honest,” he demanded.
He narrated an incident in Busia county where he confronted the President William Ruto and promised to oppose the 2023 Finance Bill unless the unconstitutional items are removed.
The senator of kiss he also revealed that, following the confrontation, an unnamed human rights activist tried to bribe him with KSh 200 million.
“We have the ability to deal with these people and the only way is to say no. If I had taken the 200 million that was sent to me through some civil society activist, and pulled out the financial law bill, I would not have achieved that success,” he said.
Supreme Court suspends decision invalidating Finance Act 2023
The Supreme Court issued a conservative order, suspending the Court of Appeal's decision that found the entire Finance Act 2023 “fundamentally flawed” and “unconstitutional.”
The decision temporarily eases concerns about the government's revenue collection efforts, which have faced intense scrutiny.
The Court of Appeal had earlier struck down the Finance Act 2023, upholding a High Court ruling that found the legislative process did not meet constitutional standards.
