Governor of Siaya James Orengo has sparked a debate online after appearing to support the idea of a broad-based government that he strongly opposed a few weeks ago.
On Saturday, August 24, the governor accompanied President William Ruto to Nandi on a business visit before attending Cooperatives Minister Wycliffe Oparanya's thanksgiving ceremony in Kakamega.
How Orengo made a u-turn to be pro-Ruto
There NandiOrengo praised Ruto for choosing to include some opposition leaders in the National Executive Council, a move he said averted an impending political crisis.
He used Ruto's decision to support Raila Odinga in his quest to become the chairman of the African Union Commission (AUC) as a reason to show his loyalty to the president.
“I want to thank the president for his commitment to help him Raila Odinga to Addis Ababa. We know (Raila) will succeed…Also, our country is one nation. We may have challenges but we should always unite,”he said.
Orengo is one of the leaders who widely criticized the talks between Ruto and Raila.
When Orengo opposed the talks between Ruto and Raila
In July, the governor insisted that justice must be given to Kenyans killed or injured during anti-government protests before any political plans can be implemented.
He wanted the political class to put aside their interests and ensure that the victims of police brutality get justice.
According to Orengo at the time, it would not be good for the two political leaders to work together, saying that the administration of Ruto you were collapsing.
He argued that working with Ruto would be an abomination and insisted that the entire government must be brought back home.
Orengo too he opposed ODM leaders to take the positions of the Council of Ministerssaying it involves betrayal of Kenyans.
