What was Ruto's request to Kenyans?

Speaking in Kakamega on Saturday, August 24, the president saw that the long-time leader of the opposition in Kenya deserves to be the head of the African Union secretariat, hence the need for the people to bless his candidacy.

Ruto noted that Raila's victory in the race will involve the success of Kenya and increase Kenya's perspective in the international arena.

“We have an opportunity as a country to produce the next chairman of the AUC, we must cooperate, it is not an individual's position but a joint position as a country. So let's all support our former prime minister Raila. Odinga, for that position because it will give us an opportunity as a country to serve at that level,” he said Ruto.

We are confident that Raila has the experience, understanding and skills needed to provide leadership to our continent. Because our continent is our future market and in all aspects, and therefore we must position ourselves accordingly,” added Ruto.

Ruto is expected to officially endorse Raila for the position on August 27.

At the same time, the ODM leader announced that he will take a break from local politics to focus on his campaign for the continental position.

Raila's quest to become AUC chairman

The ODM leader wants to succeed Moussa Faki, who was first elected to the AU secretariat in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.

He outlined an eight-point agenda that he intends to sell to African heads of state when he endorses them.

TUKO.co.ke understands that the next chairman of the AUC is expected to come from East Africa following the decision of the AU General Assembly.

Countries from North Africa will provide the deputy chairman, and the remaining regions; Central, South and West Africa producing six commissioners.

The Kenyan candidate will need the support of consensus or at least two-thirds of the votes by the member states represented by their heads.

Nairobi it has accused itself of selling Raila's bid, allocating resources around the continent to gain support from African heads of state who make up the General Assembly that will vote in February next year.

While in the AUC, Raila would adhere to the ethical principles of the chairmanship, where the office holder should take a back seat in the politics of their country and, at the same time, be neutral in the African social and political position.
