Kabras Sugar fail to finish top of Pool A after failing to beat Strathmore Leos to set up tricky quater final clash with Menengai Oilers
Kabras Sugar will clash with Menengai Oilers in the main cup quarter-finals of the Kabeberi 7s taking place at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi after a tough day on the field saw them finish second in Pool A.
Despite entering the tournament as leaders in the overall circuit standings, Kabras couldn’t overcome a resilient Strathmore Leos side, falling 22-17 on Saturday.
While they secured victories against Nakuru and Impala, their loss to Strathmore meant they had to settle for second place, setting up a high-stakes match against the top team from Pool B, Menengai Oilers.
Shabana struck a 75-million shilling partnership with SportPesa on Thursday over a three-year period, but how will that money be used?
The Leos, who topped Pool A, will now face Catholic Monks, who finished second in Pool B. Meanwhile, Kenya Harlequins, who emerged as the leaders of Pool C, are set to battle Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), who secured second place in Pool D behind KCB.
Kenya Harlequins showcased their dominance in their final pool match, landing three quick tries against Nondescripts (Nondies) to gain a comfortable lead before halftime.
Despite a spirited response from Nondies, who managed to reduce the deficit with a try, the Quins maintained their momentum.
Kenya Harlequin claim Ingo 7s bragging rights with crucial win over KCB to move top of the overall standings.
Amon Wamalwa delivered a standout performance, executing his signature kick-and-chase move for the third time that day, contributing to Quins’ 22-5 advantage with a well-converted try. Although Fred Chisia managed to add another try for Nondies, it was too little, too late, as Quins secured a 24-10 victory.
In Pool D, KCB asserted their dominance with a 26-5 win over MMUST. Elvis Olukusi opened the scoring for KCB with a powerful try, shrugging off multiple defenders. MMUST quickly responded, leveling the score with a try from Cyprian Ombeso.
However, KCB regained the lead through Floyd Wabwire, who displayed individual brilliance by turning a poor offload into a well-converted try. Heading into halftime with a 12-5 lead, KCB extended their advantage early in the second half.
Samuel Asati added the third try just 15 seconds after the restart, following a well-executed play involving Vincent Onyala. Tyson Maina then sealed the victory with an uncontested run to the try box, bringing the final score to 26-5.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the quarter-final matchups, with Kabras Sugar looking to bounce back against a formidable Menengai Oilers side, and Kenya Harlequins aiming to continue their strong form against MMUST.
