Reports have emerged online that Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to depart Liverpool for Real Madrid this summer on a free transfer, which has angered several fans.
Liverpool fans have not hidden their disappointment following reports that Trent Alexander-Arnold is edging closer to a free transfer to Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old right-back, whose contract at Anfield expires in June, has been on Madrid’s radar for the past two years, with Los Blancos making a concerted push since January to convince him to join.
With no official agreement signed yet, Liverpool remain hopeful, but the prospect of losing their vice-captain for nothing has ignited outrage within the fanbase.
Karabo Letebele is embracing his newfound fame after shocking Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, with a stunning victory at the ASA Grand Prix.
Many supporters are directing their frustration at Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), blaming them for mismanaging the contract situations of Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, and Virgil van Dijk—all of whom could leave on free transfers this summer.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration, one user @Corballyred fumed:
“People can try and put all their blame on Trent but this is absolutely shambolic from Liverpool, losing your vice-captain going into the prime of his career on a free.
“With Salah and Van Dijk possibly going as well. Well-run club my hole.”
@TomL1ttle_ echoed the sentiment:

Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had all good things to say about Kenyans after scoring twice to all but end Harambee Stars’ World Cup qualification hopes.
“Proper lads who get the club, love the club and respect the fans. If they don’t sign, it’s on FSG entirely, unlike the backup to Conor Bradley. The contract situation at Liverpool can only be described as negligence at best… Shocking from Liverpool.”
Another user @x_owner24 sarcastically wrote, “Trent leaving then, one down 2 more to go. FSG IS RUNNING THE CLUB VERY WELL.Best run club in the world.”
His sentiments were echoed by @NotoriousLFC, who tweeted,·”No matter what way you look at it to lose your Vice Captain at the peak of his career is awful business. FSG have been running us poorly for years now and we are approaching a huge cliff this Summer. #FSGOUT”
However, not all fans are lamenting his departure. Some believe Alexander-Arnold’s best years are behind him or that he’s replaceable.

“On behalf of myself and my fellow Liverpool fans, good riddance to bad rubbish.”
@Bhaveshlivelife was equally dismissive:
“No player is bigger than Liverpool. Let him just go. Conor Bradley will fix the mess at right back. Liverpool is like the River Nile, we don’t care.”
Another section of Liverpool supporters questioned whether Alexander-Arnold would thrive at Real Madrid, citing past struggles of Gareth Bale and other foreign signings at the Bernabéu.
@BrendanBrammer warned:
“He’ll be washed out in two years. All the stuff he’s got away with for being a Scouser won’t wash in the Bernabéu if they turn against him.
“Just look at Gareth Bale. He’ll be rich, but what else? Interested to see what Slot does now.”
Others took issue with how Alexander-Arnold is leaving the club, arguing that he should have signed an extension to allow Liverpool to sell him rather than departing on a free.
@CryptoKlopp pointed out:
“With Trent, it’s the fact he’s leaving for nothing, which means he will be cancelled—and rightly so—by the fanbase.
“ He could have signed with an agreement to negotiate to get market value to replace him. He will know he has left us in a £60+ million hole, and FSG won’t spend more than they get in.”
Despite the backlash, Alexander-Arnold’s contributions to Liverpool’s recent success are undeniable. Having joined the club’s academy at the age of six, he has made 349 appearances, scoring 22 goals and registering 87 assists.
During his time with the club, he has made notable achievements, including winning the 2019-20 Premier League title, ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait.
He also played a key role in the 2019 Champions League triumph. In the 2021/2022 season, he claimed FA Cup and League Cup victories.
Individually, he was named PFA Young Player of the Year in 2020, and became Liverpool’s vice-captain in 2023 following Jordan Henderson’s departure.
His departure—especially without a transfer fee—would mark a significant shift for Liverpool, and fans are bracing for an uncertain future as Arne Slot prepares to take over from Jurgen Klopp.
For now, the Anfield faithful remain divided—some mourning the potential loss of a club legend, others eager to turn the page. But one thing is certain: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid would shake Liverpool to its core.
