Former Kisumu Town West MP Kenn Nyagudi has died while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital’s private wing.

The former legislator died on the night of Sunday, March 23, 2025, while receiving treatment at the health facility in Nairobi.

He was mourned by the speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula, who wished his family comfort in bearing with the former legislator’s loss.

“I send my heartfelt sympathies to the family of former Kisumu Town West MP Reverend Kenn Nyagudi. I was privileged to have interacted with him when I was the Foreign Affairs Minister,” Wetangula said.

“He died this evening while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital. May his family be consoled and find comfort in the Lord’s arms.”

By-election win

Nyagudi first shot into the limelight when he was elected in a by-election following the death of then Kisumu Town West MP Joab Omino in 2004.

Nyagudi had replaced Omino who had been an influential figure in national politics, having risen to the position of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, a permanent secretary and also the assistant minister for Foreign Affairs during his time in politics.

In the 2007 general election, Nyagudi was defeated by former Kisumu Town West MP Olago Aluoch, who went on to win two consecutive elections, 2013 and 2017. Olago was, however, floored by Rozaah Buyu in the 2022 general election.

Failed comebacks

Nyagudi tried a political comeback in 2013 in the Kisumu Central constituency but was again defeated by then-MP Ken Obura.

In 2017, Nyagudi also attempted to return to politics, but his bid was quashed after Fred Ouda beat him, along with other candidates, including Ken Obura and former TNA Secretary-General Onyango Oloo, in the ODM primaries and subsequent elections.
