Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has met his former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Peter Munya, after attending a church service in Meru County.

According to photos shared on social media by Weru TV on Sunday, March 23, 2025, the former President was received by Munya alongside a lineup of other politicians, including the former Meru Woman Representative, Florence Kajuju.

All had assembled at a section of St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Meru, also flanked by several bishops, and proceeded to greet the former Head of State one by one as they welcomed him to the county.

Later, the former president was seen being whisked away to be led inside the church by a nun, all while waving at eager congregants who were delighted to see him grace their event and could not hide their excitement as they waved back.

Uhuru landed at around 11 am to attend the Thanksgiving service of the newly ordained Bishop of the Archdiocese of Meru, Father Jackson Murugara.

In the photos, Munya appeared elated to meet his former boss and was seen exchanging a brief conversation with him before Uhuru proceeded to greet the next leader in line, who was former Woman Representative Kajuju.

The event primarily served as a mass led by the recently ordained bishop to mark the commencement of his ministration and to thank God as he prepared to take charge of the vast diocese.

Murugara was officially ordained on March 19, 2025, in a colourful ceremony held at Kinoru Stadium.

The occasion was filled with jubilation as thousands of locals thronged the stadium to capacity, eager to witness the historic event, which also doubled as a farewell for the outgoing Bishop, Salesius Mugambi.

However, much of the excitement was also fuelled by the fact that the county had, just days prior, sworn in a new governor, Mutuma Methingia, who was also in attendance following the court’s decision to uphold Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment.

But to the disappointment of many, the governor, alongside a lineup of other politicians, including his Tharaka Nithi counterpart Muthomi Njuki, veteran politician Kiraitu Murungi, and several others, was left in disbelief after the church leaders failed to grant them a podium to address the gathering.

In his first remarks after the ordination, Murugara defended the move to clamp down on political speeches, citing the Catholic Church’s recent directive against allowing its sacred podiums to be used for political showboating and self-glorification.

“We cannot turn sacred grounds into battlegrounds for political supremacy. The pulpit is meant for the gospel, not for campaign speeches,” he stated, making it clear that the church would no longer serve as a platform for political showmanship.

However, Murugara acknowledged the presence of the leaders but limited his mention of them to their names, simply informing the eager congregation that they were in attendance.
