Five people on Saturday, March 22, 2025, tragically lost their lives after a Kenya registered cargo aircraft crashed near Mogadishu in Somalia.
Confirming the unfortunate incident, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) noted that the flight had departed from Dhobley and was headed to Aden Abdulle International Airport to deliver supplies to the African Union forces. The aircraft in the accident was a DHC-5D Buffalo with a serial number 109 and registration 5Y-RBA.
“Preliminary reports Indicate that the crash occurred at approximately 14.43Z (5.43 PM) local time.
“There were five persons on board (POB), all of whom have tragically lost their lives. The flight had departed from Dhbley (HCDB) and was en route to Aden Abdulle International Airport (HCMM).
The aviation authority also confirmed that government agencies and partners were on site for search and rescue purposes.
“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those affected. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the authority added.
Further, the authority announced that more details will be provided once confirmed, assuring that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.
Reports by the Somali Land Standard had earlier indicated that 4 Kenyan nationals were aboard the plane, and that the aircraft experienced some technical issues while it was in Dholbey. The issues were, however, sorted out before it proceeding for its destination.
