President William Ruto joined other African leaders in Windhoek on Friday, March 21, 2025, to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Nandi-Ndaitwah, which coincided with Namibia’s 35th independence anniversary.

Taking to his official X account, Ruto celebrated this milestone, noting that the occasion symbolized both political progress and national pride.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s rise to power

At 72 years old, Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected Namibia’s first female president after winning the 2024 elections, extending the ruling SWAPO party’s 35-year grip on power.

A veteran politician and former vice president, she has been a significant figure in Namibia’s political landscape for decades.

Known for her resilience and leadership, she played a crucial role in the country’s independence struggle against apartheid South Africa.

Popularly referred to as NNN, she secured 58 per cent of the vote in the highly contested elections, despite strong opposition from the youthful Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), which garnered 25.5 per cent.

Her victory solidifies continued loyalty to SWAPO, even as similar liberation-era parties in southern Africa face declining popularity.
