Rains wreak havoc in Suba West – Kenya News Agency

Residents of Ringiti Island in Suba West Sub-County are counting heavy losses after strong winds blew off roofs of several buildings.

The winds accompanying heavy rains, which pounded the area Thursday, blew off the roofs of two class rooms at Ringiti Primary, leaving pupils stranded.

Nine families were also left homeless after the wind blew off the roofs of their residential houses.

The Secretary of Ringiti Beach Management Unit, Daniel Sure, expressed concerns over the fate of the learners and the affected families.

“The affected families are undergoing a lot of tribulations since the rains also damaged other household properties. Children’s learning materials were also destroyed at home,” Sure said.

He said the ongoing rainy season makes it risky for children to learn under a tree or any temporary structure.

While appealing for intervention of well-wishers, Sure said the storm also blew off the roofs of two churches in the area.

“We appeal to government agencies and well-wishers to help us repair the damages which occurred. We also appeal for humanitarian aid to the affected families,” he said.
