Rainfall expected to pound Nairobi, Western and Nyanza regions – Kenya Met

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted rainfall in parts of the larger Nyanza region, Western, and Nairobi in their latest forecast.

According to the Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, David Gikungu, areas of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot Counties will receive rainfall between Saturday, March 22, 2025, and Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

In these regions, light showers of rain are expected in the mornings, while heavy rains are likely to be witnessed in the afternoons, with thunderstorms. The maximum temperature is expected to hit 31 degrees Celsius and could go as low as 11 degrees.

Isolated rainfall events

“Rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country. Isolated heavy rainfall events are likely to occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the southeastern lowlands, and northeastern Kenya,” the weather department stated.

In Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi counties, the weatherman predicts cloudy weather with sunny intervals in the mornings, while the afternoons will experience rainfall in a few places.

The temperatures in this region will range from 6 degrees Celsius to as high as 28 degrees during the period.

Additionally, the North-Eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are set to experience rainfall over a few areas in the morning during this period, with more rainfall and thunderstorms in the afternoons and nights.

Similarly, the temperatures in this region will range from as low as 18 degrees Celsius to a high of 38 degrees.

Eastern lowlands

The South-Eastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River counties, are also expected to receive showers over a few areas, with major rainfall in several areas on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

The temperature in these areas will range from 15 to 36 degrees Celsius.

Similarly, the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as coastal parts of Tana River, are expected to have a few showers in the area, with temperature levels ranging between 25 and 36 degrees Celsius.

With the onset of the March, April, and May rains, the meteorological department suggests that the peak of the rainfall season will fall in the month of April in several regions, except the coastal region, where the rains will peak in May.
