Daniel Komen has credited training in London alongside legends like Mo Farah and Linford Christie for shaping his record-breaking middle-distance career.
Former 3000m world record holder Daniel Komen has detailed how training with some of Britain’s greatest athletes including Sir Mo Farah and Linford Christie shaped his career.
Komen was one of the greatest middle distance runners of his generation and he credits that to only training in Kenya but also London.
Daniel Komen revealed that as he prepared for major races, he would move to London to train since it was closer to most of the locations he chose to compete.

He explained that spending time with some of the greatest athletes shaped his mindset and that is how he was able to conquer most of his races.
“London was good for me because we were going for our races in Germany, Italy and France and it was nearer and a good place and there was no interference,” Daniel Komen said.
“Sometimes, I would train with Mo Farah some American guys and some Jamaicans. Sometimes we ran with Linford Christie and we used to work with a lot of big guys.”

Daniel Komen explained that in London, there were no destructions and he would do his speed work.
“Most of the time I used to train in Kenya and then when I went to London, it was just to maintain and do a lot of speed work,” he shared.

“Because in Kenya we had a problem with the track so when we went there, we would train in Kingston University. We did a lot of workouts for about six months before races.”
With such a religious training routine, Daniel Komen was able to become a lethal distance runners.
He is mostly remembered for the 3000m world record that he held for close to 28 years before Jakob Ingebrigtsen shattered it at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia in 2024.
Daniel Komen is also remembered for holding the world best in the two mile for several years.
