Yankuba Minteh & 5 Gambia players Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy should be wary of

The 5 Gambia players Benni McCarthy should pay keen attention to as he prepares to take charge of Harambee Stars for the first time ever.

Benni McCarthy will be leading Kenya’s national team Harambee Stars out against The Gambia in what will be his first ever game in charge of the set up, set to take place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Thursday night.

The high stakes clash, which will have a huge bearing on Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will see them take on a side managed by former Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry, who knows a thing or two on the country’s football given his time with K’ogalo.

McCarthy knows he has his work cut out, and given the calibre of some of the players he will be facing, it certainly will not be easy.

His dribbling skills, combined with his vision and ability to deliver pinpoint crosses, make him a constant threat on the flanks.

Minteh’s versatility allows him to switch roles seamlessly, whether cutting inside to unleash a shot or staying wide to provide width.

His left foot is particularly lethal, enabling him to score from tight angles or provide precise assists.

For The Gambia, Minteh has been a game-changer. Since making his debut in 2023, he has already earned 12 caps and scored four goals.

His standout performances in World Cup qualifiers and African Cup of Nations matches highlight his ability to deliver in crucial moments.

Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars assistant slams South Africa’s best team over lack of sportsmanship

Harambee Stars goalkeeper trainer Moeneeb Josephs has hit out at the South African giants for not showing respect and sportsmanship following their recent league loss.

At club level, Minteh has made waves with stints at Feyenoord and Brighton & Hove Albion. His spell at Feyenoord saw him net 10 goals in 27 appearances, including a memorable brace against Ajax.

At Brighton, he has continued to impress, scoring five goals and providing three assists in 24 Premier League appearances this season. His ability to adapt to different leagues while maintaining high performance levels underscores his potential to become one of Africa’s finest footballers.

Musa Barrow

Known for his agility and powerful shooting, Musa Barrow is a dynamic striker who typically operates as a left winger but is equally effective as a centre-forward.

His knack for cutting inside from the left and unleashing long-range strikes makes him a nightmare for defenders.

Standing at 1.83 metres, Barrow’s physical presence adds another dimension to his game, allowing him to hold up play and link with teammates effectively.

Former Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi has shed light on Benni McCarthy’s thoughts on the quality of the Kenyan national football team.

Since making his international debut in 2018, Barrow has amassed 44 caps and nine goals. He has consistently delivered in high-stakes matches, including World Cup qualifiers and AFCON fixtures.

Adams combines physicality with technical prowess, making him a well-rounded player. His journey from Dartford’s youth ranks to professional football speaks volumes about his determination, overcoming injuries to establish himself as a key figure.

Since his international debut in 2018, Adams has earned 20 caps and scored one goal. His leadership and experience have been invaluable, particularly in World Cup qualifiers and AFCON campaigns.

Sowe is adept at holding up play, bringing teammates into the game, and using his height to win aerial duels.

Although primarily a striker, his versatility allows him to operate as a second forward or even out wide when needed. His sharp eye for goal and intelligent movement make him a valuable asset for The Gambia.

Sowe has earned 14 caps for Gambia. While his goal tally stands at just one, his impact extends beyond scoring, as he creates space and opportunities for his teammates.

At club level, Sowe has played across various leagues, with spells at CSKA Sofia, FK Rostov, and currently Çaykur Rizespor in the Turkish Süper Lig. His form this season has been outstanding, netting 14 goals in 27 appearances. His experience and skill set make him a vital asset for both club and country as they aim for greater success.

Omar Colley

Omar Colley is a commanding centre-back and the captain of The Gambia national team. At 1.91 metres, his physical dominance and aerial prowess make him a formidable presence in defence.

Colley is highly regarded for his positioning, composure under pressure, and ability to read the game, neutralising opposing forwards with ease.

His leadership qualities have been instrumental in The Gambia’s rise as a competitive force in African football. With 56 caps and a goal to his name, Colley has been a consistent performer since making his debut in 2012.

At club level, Colley has had an impressive career, featuring for top European sides. After spells at Genk and Sampdoria, he joined PAOK Thessaloniki in 2024, where he continues to excel in the Greek Super League.

His wealth of experience in elite competitions makes him a crucial figure for both club and country.
