The former Udinese star believes Benni McCarthy has the coaching expertise to transform Harambee Stars and lead them to success.

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Siyabonga Nomvethe believes Benni McCarthy has all it takes to guide the Kenyan football team, Harambee Stars.

The former Udinese player played with Benni McCarthy for the South African U-23 team and Bafana Bafana and he is confident that he will make an impact working with Harambee Stars. He also worked as an assistant coach to McCarthy at AmaZulu.

He lauded Benni McCarthy as a talented tactician and explained that once he gets to interact with all the players, he will have an easy time working with them and ensuring Kenya bounces back to winning ways.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper trainer Moeneeb Josephs has hit out at the South African giants for not showing respect and sportsmanship following their recent league loss.


Siyabonga Nomvethe admitted that the former Manchester United assistant coach has a tough job ahead of him but he will surely deliver when given ample time.

“He’s a good coach. No doubt. That man is too clever and he knows how to coach. He’s got the Uefa Pro—when you have that it shows you know something about coaching,” he said as quoted by Times Live.

“I rate him as the best young (South African) coach. Definitely he will do well. But you know sometimes as a new coach you have to read the players, you have to check how many are playing locally and how many in Europe.

Siyabonga Nomvethe reminisced about the times he worked with Benni McCarthy, revealing that there was a lot to learn from him.

He further explained that it was easy working with Benni McCarthy since they had played together in the past and being an assistant to him would be a walk in the park.

“It was nice to work with Benni. He’s my friend, he’s my teammate, he’s everything. When Benni came and approached me to join the coaching staff as AmaZulu, it happened because I was giving him full support, because I know things in Durban,” he added.

“We had played for the U-23s, for Bafana and it was so easy to work with a person like Benni.”

Benni McCarthy’s first assignment with Harambee Stars will be the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Kenyan team will face off against Gambia in an away match in Ivory Coast and then play against Gabon at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Harambee Stars are currently in fourth place in group F with five points. Ivory Coast lead the group with 10 points.
