President William Ruto has once again reshuffled the government structure in an announcement made by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.
The Ministry of Sports has been a victim of the shuffles and this time around, Principal Secretary Peter Tum has been moved to another department.
Engineer Peter Tum has been appointed as Kenya’s ambassador to Kinshasa, DRC as Mr. Elijah Mwangi has replaced him as the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Sports (Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports).

Engineer Peter Tum was appointed as the Principal Secretary for Sports in 2023, replacing Jonathan Mueke who was moved to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
Peter Tum worked with the then Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba who was then demoted from the role in mid-2024. Kipchumba Murkomen then took charge, coming from serving as the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Roads and Transport.
Kipchumba Murkomen’s stay was not long either as he was replaced by Salim Mvurya who was then serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.

His main roles there included overseeing business development in financial and strategic management, risk, and leadership effectiveness.

Elijah Mwangi’s appointment as PS for Sports is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the ministry with his extensive background in strategic management and leadership seeking to play a pivotal role in advancing Kenya’s sports agenda.
Elijah Mwangi is immediately tasked to work with Salim Mvurya to oversee the crucial renovation of stadia and Kenya’s preparation for CHAN. Kenya is also preparing to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations together with Uganda and Tanzania.
This reshuffle is part of President William Ruto’s broader strategy to accelerate the implementation of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
