Margaret Nduta: Musalia Mudavadi announces an approximate number of Kenyans locked abroad

Speaking on Wednesday, March 19, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Musalia Mudavadihe warned Kenyans traveling abroad to be cautious with the laws of other nations, as breaking them can cause serious harm.

He emphasized that when a person enters a foreign country, he should follow the nation's legal system.

“We try to collect data because when Kenyans travel, they do not announce that they are traveling. They are going at their own discretion, and it is their right to travel to any country they have been given,” He said.

How does Kenya help foreign locals?

Mudavadi, recognizing the Kenyan government's efforts to intervene in the Nduta case, described his situation as sad.

He assured that diplomatic negotiations with the Vietnam authorities are ongoing in an effort to find a possible solution.

“This situation is sad, and we hope a positive solution. However, there are broad issues we have to address,” He said.

The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney General's Office, is investigating an agreement to exchange prisoners to provide relief to Kenyans in prison abroad.

According to Mudavadi, the offenses facing Kenyans in jail are of various forms, from minor to serious offenses, and officials are working to get full information about the cases.

“I may not know the full number of those in Vietnam, but in total, we have approximately 1,000 Kenyans in different countries serving bonds for various offenses,” He said, adding that not all cases are related to drugs.

Mudavadi, who is also the Prime Minister of Kenya, called on Kenyans to be careful and to avoid engaging in conditions that could put them in legal problems.

He emphasized that Kenya should not be associated with illegal activities such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling, or illegal weapons trade.

“We have been strengthening trade agreements and international cooperation, but we also emphasize responsible travel. I always remind Kenyan youth that once you land in other countries, you are responsible for following its rules. He advised.

Mudavadi welcomes the Dutch Foreign Minister

His statements came after he held a high-level diplomatic negotiation with Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp and his delegation, in Nairobi for the national visit of King Willem-Alexander.

Through a post on its social networks, Mudavadi said that their talks emphasized Kenya's commitment to maintaining democracy, good governance and respect for the law as an important principle of good governance.
