Why is Waititu in prison?
The former governor was found guilty of illegally giving himself a county contract when he was in power using a company owned by his family.
He was sentenced to 12 years in prison or fined KSh 52.5 million.
Kenyans are sorry for the Waititu
Here are some of their views:
AMOH JERUIYOT:
“I do not support corruption, but why does the law apply only to those who criticize the government?”
Bravo kilogram:
“Kenya may be a country with the most unfair system in the world.”
DAN BEN GEGA:
“I do not support corruption and I rebuke it with all force, but I will never enjoy someone in jail. Anyone who has ever been imprisoned or had a close relative in prison understands the pain; psychological suffering, and how the family is stuck. My prayers are with their father. It is not easy for his age.”
Ipkorir Masit SNR:
“This is where the corrupt should be. The more he is accustomed to his new residence, the better.
Richard Muteti:
“I think the penal rules should be amended. After reaching a certain age, one should not be jailed but given a home sentence … even the judge who sentenced Waititu is also a corrupt and has benefited from corrupt contracts several times.”
Is Waititu's health increasingly deteriorating?
Earlier this month, political activist Nuru Okanga visited Waititu in prison.
He revealed that the politician's health was improving after being taken to hospital because of blood pressure.
According to Okanga, political influence groups are alleged to interfere with Waititu cases in their own interests.
He complained that Waititu was the only politician serving imprisonment for similar offenses as other politicians who are still free.
