Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala was slow off the blocks but had enough to storm to a first global win during the ASA Grand Prix II in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.
Ferdinand Omanyala ensured his tour of South Africa ended in victorious fashion when he roared to a season’s best in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Omanyala had finished third in 10.22 seconds at the ASA Grand Prix I in Pretoria last Wednesday and was looking to make amends after South African teen Karabo Letebe beat him at the Pliditch Stadium.
Africa’s fastest man ensured lightning did not strike twice when he summoned a great finishing kick to secure victory in Johannesburg.
Olympic champion Gabby Thomas explains why she opted for a second job after finding out that there’s no enough money on the track.
Having come off the blocks slow, Omanyala had to up his speed in the final 40m of the race to win just ahead of South African duo Tsebo Matsoso and Bradley Nkoana.

The 29-year-old won the race in 10.08 seconds, a season’s best, as Matsoso clocked 10.12 seconds while Nkoana timed 10.16 seconds.
Kenya’s Mark Otieno finished fifth in 10.30 seconds, an improvement from the 1039 seconds that he recorded in Pretoria last week.
It was a great return to winning ways for Omanyala who is looking forward to a good 2025 season after a less than impressive 2024 campaign.
The Commonwealth champion has skipped the World Indoor Championships to focus on outdoor events and will next run at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix in Gaborone on April 12.
Omanyala’s time in South Africa is a great confidence booster and he will be eyeing a first sub-10 performance of the season in the upcoming events with his eyes firmly on an impressive show at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in September.
