2 persons of interest apprehended in connection to heist at Wajir petrol station

Law enforcement officers have arrested two persons of interest connected to a midnight robbery at a petrol station in Wajir County.

According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, March 20, 2025, the arrests followed a swift police response to a distress call from Shawal Petrol Station.

“Police officers from Wajir Police Station have apprehended two persons of interest linked to a daring dead-night robbery at Shawal Petrol Station along Mandera Road in Wajir Township,” DCI stated.

The robbery involved a gang of five individuals, who were dressed in jungle uniforms and impersonating police officers. The gang stormed the petrol station, overpowering the watchman and pump attendant before tying their hands with ropes. They then fled with Ksh30,000 in cash.

“The suspects, identified as 49-year-old John Mwaura and his 28-year-old accomplice Muia Mutuku, were nabbed after a distress call alerted officers of an ongoing heist at the said petrol station.

“Acting swiftly, officers arrived at the scene and discovered that a gang of five thugs, clad in jungle uniforms, impersonating police officers, had stormed the petrol station overpowering the watchman and pump attendant, tying their hands with ropes before making off with Sh30,000 in cash,” the statement read in part.

Their freedom was brief as the police quickly gave a chase, resulting in the arrest of two persons. The pair was caught with several incriminating items, including a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military jungle trouser, and a military jungle jacket.

“However, their escape was short-lived as the officers hotly pursued them leading to the arrest of the two who were swiftly cornered and taken into custody. The duo was found in possession of a mallet, an Administration Police jungle jacket, a military jungle trouser, and a military jungle jacket, among other incriminating items,” the statement read further.

Adding;

“The suspects are currently undergoing processing pending their court appearance. Meanwhile, the hunt continues for the trio still at large.”
