Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has refuted reports by a section of media outlets regarding the passing of Dr. Daniel Ndege Chacha, a University of Nairobi Medical Registrar attached to the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.
In a press statement, KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Evason Kamuri said that Dr. Chacha was referred to KNH from a hospital in Kitengela on Monday, March 10, 2025, in critical condition.
Upon arrival, he was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Department, where doctors diagnosed him with severe liver and kidney complications.
“Despite not being registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA), KNH expedited his registration and ensured he received urgent medical care,” the statement read in part.
Kamuti clarified that a team of specialists, including liver and kidney experts, worked tirelessly to stabilize his condition.
“However, his health deteriorated, necessitating admission to the Critical Care Unit. Despite all medical interventions, Dr. Chacha tragically passed away on Friday, March 14, 2025. His family was immediately informed,” he added.
Contrary to earlier reports by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) that KNHl had detained Chacha’s body, Dr. Kamuri explained that his remains were released from the KNH Farewell Home and transported to Migori County on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
According to the KMPDU deputy secretary general Dennis Miskellah, Chacha first sought medical attention at KNH but was turned away because he lacked active medical cover.
“Despite dedicating his time and expertise to saving lives at KNH, Dr Chacha was left to fend for himself when he needed care the most. The total bill came to around KSh 300,000, but SHA said they can only pay about KSh 30,000,” Miskellah stated.
KNH has at the same time reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality and specialized healthcare services to all patients.
