The Elder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) has been brought before the Migori Court and charged with the financial fraud of KSh 9.76 million.

The defendant, identified as Jared Otieno Owi, was presented before senior judge Naomi Waomi on Monday, March 17, 2025.
He was charged with 10 offenses in connection with the economic crime that was implemented when he was an accountant of the Kenya National Teachers' Association (KNUT) in the Migori branch.
The court documents that TUKO.co.ke stared at them indicate that the defendant served as an accountant for the Migori Teachers Children Program Education KNUT Fund for over 25 years.
Crimes against him are said to take place between January 12 and November 19, 2024. He denied all charges.
According to the prosecution paper that TUKO.co.ke Read it, Owi is charged with conspiracy to defraud, forgery and misuse of the office.
Charges against the elder of the SDA Migori church
In one of the charges, the accused allegedly submitted through fraudulent checks to banks KCB and Cooperative while claiming to be approved by the signed on the Migori Children's Education Fund.
He also allegedly used his office to provide benefits to Awendo Books and Stationery and Churchil Owuor by setting KSh 329,200 and KSh 573,600 respectively claiming they were all members of Sacco.
The suspect was released for a Ksh 1 million bond by the trustee.
“This court gives you an additional trustee of KSh 500,000 as you already have one sponsor the bond will be added to KSh 1 million by the trustee,” ordered the judge.
The date of the case is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19.

Owi was charged with several other defendants. One of his fellow defendants Elisha Ochieng 'was brought before the court on Friday, March 14 and confessed to the allegations Knut KSh 909,820 and donated the money that was deposited into his account by the church elder.
Seven other suspects are said to have not yet been arrested. The court has issued permits for their arrest.
According to court documents, the prosecution will depend on at least five witnesses in the case.
