What Secretary General Harry said about Sha and private hospitals
Addressing the media on Monday, March 17, Secretary of Health Harry Kimtai said it was wrong for private hospitals to refuse to provide outpatient services as outlined under the new health model.
Kimtai warned private hospitals against dismissing patients seeking outdoor care.
“From the statistics and data we have seen, we have found that many private centers are not involved in outpatient services, which are funding for primary health care,” Kimtai said.
According to the Minister of Health, all hospitals, as well as private health facilities, are legally required to provide medical care to outpatients to Kenyans.
Kimtai warned that the ministry may have to take action against the health facilities that violated the law, including deprivation of registration and the possibility of closure.
“Private hospitals in Kenya have been tasked with providing outpatient services in accordance with the rules of the Community Health Authority (SHA), which outline specific guidelines for service delivery. We have shown them statistics and will know why they do not participate. Is it because they do not understand the example?”
“If (private hospitals) continue this … if they do not follow the law and do not want to provide services to Kenyans, then they will have to close the store because they are also under the extension of the license. They should not blame the government,” the health minister warned.
