Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two persons of interest linked to a Ksh1.1 million vehicle importation scam.

DCI, in a statement issued on Saturday, March 15, 2025, via social media, said that the two identified as Yunus Hamza Hussein and Brian Omweri had been arrested by their officers based at Kilimani Police Station.

The incident, the anti-crime agency says, dates back to May 27, 2022, when Hussein, while masquerading as a savvy salesperson at one of the car yards along Ngong Road, is said to have duped an unsuspecting victim with promises of delivering two vehicles, a Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L, for a total of Ksh2.9 million.

Victim scammed

With the deal having sounded so good, the victim paid a hefty deposit of Ksh1.1 million, only for his car seller to disappear.

“Detectives from DCI Kilimani have nabbed two crafty fraudsters accused of swindling a Kenyan out of Sh1.1 million in a sham vehicle importation scam.

“The incident dates back to May 27, 2022, when Yunus Hamza Hussein, masquerading as a savvy salesperson at Rana Motors along Ngong Road, duped an unsuspecting victim with promises of delivering two vehicles, a Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L for Sh2.9 million.

“Enticed by the charade, the victim paid a hefty deposit of Sh1.1 million, only to watch the fraudster vanish into thin air,” the DCI stated.

Forensic intelligence

The arrest was aided by forensic intelligence that helped the detectives trail Hussein to his hideout at Crystal Apartments in Athi River.

According to the police, several SIM cards were seized during Hussein’s arrest. He then led detectives to his accomplice, Brian Omweri, in Makongeni, Thika, where the officers also recovered a SIM card linked to a Ksh550,000 payment from the victim.

The two are being detained at Kilimani Police Station awaiting their court arraignment on Monday, March 17, 2025.
