Murega Baichu, the husband of impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, has spoken out following the High Court’s decision to uphold her removal from office, delivering a significant blow to her bid to reclaim the county’s top seat.

Taking to his Facebook account on Friday, March 14, 2025, shortly after the ruling, Murega shared a message of faith, declaring they would still continue to trust in God despite how badly things could turn for them.

“Jehovah remains God regardless of our circumstances,” he posted.

Murega, who has been a vocal and unwavering supporter of his wife throughout her tenure and subsequent legal battle, had also accompanied her to the Milimani Law Courts for the much-anticipated ruling.

According to videos shared by their Meru-based television channel, Baite TV, he sat beside her throughout the court session and listened carefully as the proceedings unfolded.

Earlier in the morning, before the verdict was delivered, Murega appeared in high spirits, confidently striding into the courtroom alongside Mwangaza, smiling for the cameras and seemingly unfazed by the weight of the moment.

Court ruling

The ruling marked the climax of a protracted legal showdown that stemmed from the Senate’s decision in December 2024 to impeach Mwangaza—making her the first county governor in Kenya’s history to be removed from office twice.

In her petition challenging the ouster, she argued that the process had trampled on constitutional provisions, failed to meet the required legal threshold, and was executed in blatant defiance of a valid court order.

She further contended that the entire exercise was riddled with chaos, rendering it unlawful.

However, in its ruling on Friday, March 14, 2025, the High Court quashed her claims, asserting that the Senate had acted squarely within the confines of the law.

The three-judge bench ruled that the impeachment process had adhered to constitutional guidelines, ensuring Mwangaza was granted a fair hearing and due process. The court further determined that the Senate had not deliberately defied the court order issued earlier by the High Court in Meru and that Mwangaza had failed to prove that the proceedings had been tainted by bias or interference from other legal cases.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Bahati Mwamuye declared:

“Accordingly, the High Court sitting at Milimani issued the following orders: a) The amended petition dated December 23, 2024, which is the subject of the proceedings herein, is found to be without merit and is dismissed. The Gazette Notice No.10351 vol. CXXVI-No. 130 dated August 20, 2024, published on August 21, 2024, and issued by the Respondent, communicating the decision and/or resolution of the Senate to remove the Petitioner from office as the Governor of Meru County by way of impeachment, is affirmed for the purposes of these proceedings.”

County official

The verdict, which now seals Mwangaza’s fate and extinguishes any hope of her retaining the governorship, comes just two years after MCAs put her on the spot for controversially appointing her husband, Murega Baichu, as Meru Youth Service patron and Meru Hustlers Ambassador.

The appointment sent shockwaves across the county, sparking fierce public outrage and political uproar, with critics branding it a brazen act of nepotism.

“This was the beginning of the end. She lost public trust the moment she brought personal interests into leadership,” Igembe East MCA Titus Muriithi remarked at the time.

But Mwangaza remained defiant, justifying her choice by insisting that Baichu was serving in a voluntary capacity and was the ideal figure to inspire the county’s youth.

“He is a mentor, a role model. No one questions when other leaders involve their spouses, so why is my case different?” she argued then.

Baichu himself fiercely defended his appointment, asserting that he had played a pivotal role in Mwangaza’s campaign and saw no issue in being entrusted with a county position.

Additionally, he justified his role as Meru Hustlers Ambassador, contending that he was best suited to spearhead the creative economy, having been deeply involved in the industry.

“The county government cannot benefit from taxes in the creative sector if the industry is not developed,” he maintained, pledging to unite artists and provide them with a platform to engage with the governor.

Yet, the controversy never truly died down. His conspicuous presence at county functions and high-level meetings only fuelled further discontent, culminating in the MCAs formally initiating the process to eject Mwangaza from office on grounds of nepotism.
