President William Ruto has promised to transform the Kibera slum into a better estate with proper sanitation and housing.
Speaking during his tour of Nairobi County on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Ruto also revealed that he would ensure that the neighbouring Lang’ata constituency will also not be left behind in his transformation agenda.
(Kibera and Lang’ata will cease to be slums to become estates. I have come here to launch the affordable housing units here. With these houses, you shall pay the equivalent rent you are currently parting with and still be able to own the house.)
Ruto also promised to sponsor 170 students from poor backgrounds to a school launched in the Ngong area, noting that the area MPs will also sponsor five students each.
(I will sponsor 170 students to this school while your MPs will sponsor five other students each to learn in this school.)
More classrooms
The head of state also promised to build 10 more classrooms in the Kibra constituency and construct a Ksh500 million market in the area.
“We want to make sure that Kibra is in tandem with the rest of Nairobi as we create social infrastructure and as we create other facilities that will enhance the livelihoods of the people of this county,” Ruto stated.

This comes just a day after Ruto promised to transform Mathare into a decent estate during his tour of the constituency on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
During the trip, Ruto instructed Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi to ensure the area was well covered by electricity by August 2025.
The head of state equally pledged additional promises, this time revealing his grand plan of transforming the bustling Mathare slum into a city and estate.
“Mimi nimeamua Mathare haitakuwa slum tena; hii Mathare tutabadilisha iwe city na iwe estate mahali kuna nyumba safi na kuna heshima,” Ruto said. (I have resolved that Mathare should no longer be a slum. We shall transform Mathare into a city and an estate with hygienic houses and respect.)
