More money in the offing for Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon & Co as Athlos sets date for 2025 event

Faith Kipyegon and Gabby Thomas are among athletes who will look forward to earning more after Athlos announced dates for the second edition of the lucrative women’s-only event.

Multiple Olympics champions Faith Kipyegon and Gabby Thomas are assured of more money in the bank after one of the most lucrative track meets was scheduled for later in the year.

Athlos, the highly successful women’s-only track meet that had its first edition in New York last September, will take place in October this year in what promises to be a bigger and better second edition.

The organisers have slotted the event on October 10, 2025 in New York, just after the track season is over, with the World Championships and Diamond Leagues, and already Thomas, fellow Olympics champions Masai Russell and Marileidy Paulino as well as former Olympics gold medalist Jasmine Camacho-Quinn have confirmed their participation.

“The moment I stepped into Icahn last year, it was immediately apparent that we had to do it again—somehow even bigger. The appetite, the atmosphere, the energy—it was obvious,” Athlos founder Alexis Ohanian said in a statement released on Wednesday morning as per CITIUS Mag.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has set high expectations for his fellow South African Benni McCarthy who was recently appointed Harambee Stars coach.

“The reception from the athletes, fans, and broader public was beyond what we could have imagined. I can’t wait for everyone to hear what surprises we have in store for 2025.”

Athletes and fans will be intrigued to know what more is in store after last year’s success where winners of each race were walking home with $60,000, considered the biggest winning prize on track outside the World Championships, second place attracting $25,000, and third placed finishers getting $10,000.

At Athlos, $8,000, $5,000 and $2,500 was awarded to athletes who finished in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively.

Last year, American Brittany Brown, the Olympics 200m bronze medalist, was the biggest winner when she took home $85,000 for winning the 200m and finishing second in 100m with Kipyegon (1,500m), Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith (100m) and Tigst Duguma (800m) among African athletes who won their respective disciplines to walk away with $60,000 each.

It will be a good year for Thomas as she is also signed up for the Michael Johnson-led Grand Slam Track that has four legs in Kingston, Miami, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, where winners of each race will bank $100,000 per leg while there is also the World Championships that will attract prize money.
