Kakamega: 7 people were arrested for torturing alcoholics and illegally detaining inmates

Police in Kakamega have arrested seven people allegedly running an illegal station in the cemetery, where nine people were detained and severely punished.

The victims, men and women, were forced into one room with a narrow, clean -up and deprived of basic needs, as well as sanitation and freedom of walking.

The investigation revealed that the center was created under the pretext of punishing those suspected of drinking alcohol in the area. However, what started as social repression increased quickly and became an operation of robbery and abuse.

The prisoners were released only after paying KSh 300 to the so -called “disciplinary masters,” while those who could not afford the bribe to endure physical and psychological suffering for three days.

One victim narrated how they were taken without explanation, and found others already beaten.

“They just pulled me out of my door, and before I knew, I was locked in with other people, and was whipped for three days,” The survivor narrated.

Another victim explained how they were expelled from home when they were bathing, not knowing where he was being sent.

“At six o'clock at night the whips started, they hit me a lot, my thighs are still biting,” He said.

All men and women had locked themselves in an disrespectful room surrounded by a clay wall, without any separation. They survived one meal a day, and had to use dirty buckets as a toilet.

“When we were overwhelmed, we would use a bucket no matter who was watching, because we had no choice. In the evening they were bringing porridge and pushing a week,” The victim narrated.

Who did the Kakamega Prison?

Eyewitnesses and local residents revealed that the group conducted its activities fearlessly, and arrested people arbitrarily and silenced anyone who interviewed them.

“If you ask why people are detained, they would threaten to detain you too,” Said one resident.

Kakamega city assistant Isaac Ayumba confirmed the operation, saying that law enforcementists took immediate action when they received information about their illegal imprisonment.

“I first went to the local village elder to ask for the allegations. We confirmed the presence of the inmate's room and moved to save the victims,” He said.

Following the rescue operation, police officers and national government administration have arrested seven suspects, including a village elder allegedly leading in custody.

Citizen TV reported that the suspects were arrested were: Emmanuel Nyangweso, Derick Owino, Metrine Olenyo, Brian Obonyo, Johnson Shirava, Koffi Anan and Charles Kisamani.

The suspects are now facing numerous charges, including illegal imprisonment, attacking and threatening. One of them was also found with marijuana.
