The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the interdiction of a police officer linked to the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy in Shauri Moyo.
The announcement came on the evening of Wednesday, March 6, 2025, as authorities launched investigations into the incident.
The shooting, which occurred on March 4, 2025, triggered outrage and violent protests in the area. According to NPS, investigations began immediately after the incident, leading to the identification of the implicated officer. The officer was disarmed and placed on interdiction, while the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was asked to ensure accountability.
“Following an alleged shooting incident that took place yesterday, 4 March 2025, in Shauri Moyo, the National Police Service wishes to update the public on the progress of investigations as follows: Upon receipt of the report, the police commenced investigations immediately and identified a police officer suspected of involvement in the incident,” NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated.
The NPS reassured the public that thorough and transparent investigations are being carried out by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Internal Affairs Unit. Authorities have urged residents, particularly the youth, to remain calm and assist in the investigation by providing any relevant information.
“Necessary action was taken, including disarming and interdicting the officer, as well as notifying the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, in compliance with the law. Further open and transparent investigations are being conducted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Internal Affairs Unit,” the statement read further.

Violent protests
Following the shooting, tensions escalated as angry residents flooded the streets on Tuesday night, demanding justice. Viral videos captured the intensity of the protests, with demonstrators blaming the police for the teen’s death. By March 5, the unrest had worsened, with rioters torching a police vehicle and setting fires in residential areas.
Protesters also blocked a major road leading to Eastleigh, using burning tyres and stones to barricade the streets, disrupting traffic and business operations. Law enforcement officers struggled to control the situation, resorting to tear gas and water cannons to disperse the angry crowds.
The Kenya Red Cross reported on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, that its first responders attended to 37 casualties following violent protests in Majengo, Nairobi. Among the injured, two individuals in critical condition were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital and Pumwani Maternity Hospital for urgent treatment.
“Earlier today, Kenya Red Cross first responders attended to 37 casualties following protests in Majengo, Nairobi. Two critically injured individuals were evacuated by @EMS_Kenya to Kenyatta National Hospital, while one was taken to Pumwani Maternity. Our teams set up a triage post at Riatha Mosque to provide immediate medical assistance,” the statement by the organisation read.
