‘Survival for the fittest’ – Gor Mahia official challenges Congolese goalkeeper to fight for slot amidst stiff competition

The Gor Mahia official has explained why the new goalkeeper must prove himself with the team spoilt or choice in the department.

Gor Mahia team manager Victor Nyaoro has made a rallying call to new goalkeeper Giscard Mavoungou.

The Congloses shot stopper was signed in the mid-season transfer window and will have to fight for his place in the already stacked department.  Gor Mahia, who are the record Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions , already have Gad Mathews, Kevin Omondi and Caleb Omondi, making it hard to understand why Gor Mahia opted to sign another goalkeeper.

While the competition for a starting role will leave most players unhappy for being left out of the squad, Nyaoro says Mavoungu will have to prove himself even though he is a starter at the national team. “Our import goalkeeper also plays for his national team. We also have three competent goalkeepers, meaning it will be survival for the fittest,’’ Nyaoro told Citizen Digital.

Nyaoro pointed out that donning the Gor Mahia jersey will be on merit, and that the decision will fully depend on the goalkeeper trainer and the coach to make without interference. He added that it doesn’t matter who the first-choice currently is but that the one who proves equal to the task will carry the day.

“The fittest will start at any given time. It doesn’t mean we have an obvious first starter as of now. The goalkeeper trainer and the head coach will decide every other time who to start.’’
