Nicholas Muyoti breaks silence over links to Harambee Stars job

Nairobi United coach Nicholas Muyoti has commented on reports that have heavily linked him to the Harambee Stars assistant coach role.

Nairobi United coach Nicholas Muyoti has refuted claims that he has been offered an opportunity to work with new Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy as one of his assistants.

Muyoti was reported to have been identified as the local assistant to McCarthy but those reports were cooled when the tactician’s backroom staff was revealed, being composed of South Africans.

McCarthy has opted to work with his key allies Vasili Manousakis as assistant coach, Moeneeb Josephs as goalkeeper trainer and Pilela Maposa as performance analyst, all who were part of his backroom team at South African club AmaZulu, with no official communication on whether a local tactician will join them.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Muyoti denied that he had been offered the job but left the door open for a role on McCarthy’s technical bench, if he is called upon.

Incoming Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will get to work with the man he had selected as assistant after his current cut ties with him.

“I have not joined the national team technical bench as it has been widely reported. If the appointing authority is convinced that I have something to offer to the team, then I am ready to serve. I am willing to join hands with McCarthy and the rest in restoring the team’s lost glory,” said the former Nairobi City Stars coach.

The tactician just joined the highly ambitious Nairobi United last month after over three years at City Stars but has a wealth of experience as coach and former Harambee Stars player.

He, however, believes McCarthy’s understanding of the African football landscape will make him a success with the Kenya national team.

“It was important to have an experienced coach, who will get the national team back to where it is supposed to be,” Muyoti further said.

“His track record both as a player and a coach is impressive. There are a lot of expectations, but we have to be patient. With the right support, he will improve the team and our position on the FIFA standings.”

The 47-year-old will now focus on his job at Nairobi United, who are in a tight title race in the second tier National Super League, leading with 44 points from 21 matches, while APS Bomet are second just a point behind, as Kibera Black Stars occupy third spot with 39.
