Millions Benni McCarthy will earn as Harambee Stars coach

Newly-appointed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will earn up to four times what President William Ruto is paid during his two-year stint in Kenya.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will take home a salary of up to Ksh8 million per month during his two-year stay in Kenya.

The South African legend was unveiled on Monday to take over the national team and it was revealed that he will be in charge for two years until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations which Kenya will co-host with neighbours Uganda and Tanzania.

Not much was given over how much he will earn but Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohammed said his salary will also include big performance-based bonuses if he meets certain objectives.

“The contract rewards the technical bench with every good performance. We believe we have put together the right technical bench. The performance reward system, being KPI for the coaches, and entire technical bench, and their term is up to AFCON 2027,” said Mohammed during McCarthy’s unveiling on Monday.

Incoming Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will get to work with the man he had selected as assistant after his current cut ties with him.

However, it has now been revealed that McCarthy will take home $62,000 (Ksh8 million) per month in salary and bonuses during his time in charge of Harambee Stars.

The total package is distributed into a monthly guarantied salary plus bonuses that will be topped up based on how his team performs starting with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against the Gambia and Gabon this month.

Kenya are fourth on their World Cup qualification group with five points, while Ivory Coast, Gabon and Burundi lead with 10, nine and seven points respectively after four games, and with six matches remaining, there is still hope with McCarthy promising to do all he can to ensure they qualify.

If he pulls off what many perceive to be an impossible job and qualify for the World Cup, then McCarthy will be guaranteed hefty bonuses and the same applies to the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) as well as AFCON 2027 which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

The amount may be huge amongst Kenyans but it is a massive drop on what McCarthy was earning during his stint at Manchester United, where he worked as attacking coach.

McCarthy was reportedly earning £40,000 (Ksh6.6 million) per week, translating to a monthly salary of £160,000 (Ksh26.4 million, during his two-year stay at Old Trafford from July 2022 to July 2024.
