‘I can see massive performance’- Ferdinand Omanyala’s partner returns to the track after injury setback

The mother of one has marked her return to competition with an impressive start after overcoming a knee injury.

Ferdinand Omanyala’s partner Laventa Amutavi is back competing after being under the radar for several years.

Amutavi, like her partner, Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala, is a sprinter, but she also occasionally competes in the long jump.

She faced a huge setback in 2023 after going down with a nasty knee injury (a swelling and fluid in the knee) that forced her to be out of competition but she has since announced her comeback.

Laventa Amutavi revealed that she kept showing up for training even with the injury, which is how the situation worsened. She now had to take it easy on herself in training and nurse the injury until she felt ready to race.

In 2024, she only competed once, at the National Championships where she finished third in the heats of the 100m. For the 2025, season, Laventa Amutavi has yet to lay down a solid plan but has already started competing.

She was in action at the second Athletics Kenya weekend meet at the Thika Stadium where she finished an impressive fourth in the women’s 100m final.

'It meant so much to me'- Justin Gatlin thanks old nemesis Usain Bolt for saving his career

Justin Gatlin has paid homeage to Usain Bolt for reviving his sprinting career after getting back into the sport in 2010.

The race was won by Millicent Ndoro as Esther Mbagari and Eunice Kadogo finished second and third. Laventa Amutavi also raced in the 200m, finishing second as Brenda Masitsa claimed the win in the race.

“So far, this season is great because I can see massive performance and a massive improvement from my past performances. I can confidently say that I feel good, I feel great and I am hoping for the best,” Laventa Amutavi said in an interview after her final race.

The injury was an obstacle to the soft-spoken sprinter but that is now past tense and as the outdoor season nears, she will be looking to make a mark and follow in the footsteps of her partner, Ferdinand Omanyala.
