Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has revealed that 46 per cent of employees at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua come from one ethnic group.
In the audit report shared, Gathungu underscored that the former DP’s office failed to comply with the law on ethnic diversity, further pointing out that his office, under his leadership, had 542 employees, out of which 249 were from one ethnic community.
“This was contrary to Section 7(1) and 7(2) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act, 2008 which provides that all public establishments shall seek to represent the diversity of the people in Kenya in the employment of staff and the no establishment shall have more than one-third of its staff from the same ethnic community,” the report added.

Salary non-compliance
Similarly, Gathungu’s report investigated the office’s compliance with the minimum net salary rule and discovered that management had breached the law during Gachagua’s reign as DP.
She observed that 42 staff members at former DP Gachagua’s office received a net salary of less than one-third of their basic salary during various months of the year.
“This was contrary to Section 19(3) of the Employment Act, 2007 which states that all deductions made by an employer from the wages or salaries of his employees at any one time shall not exceed two-thirds of such wages or salaries,” she added.
