‘We were always on top’

Victor Wanyama has spoken glowingly over how he reveled in beating bitter Arsenal during his time with North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Harambee Stars midfielder Victor Wanyama rates his time at Tottenham Hotspur as the best in his career as it included some memorable wins against Arsenal.

Wanyama left Southampton in 2016 to join Spurs, linking up with his former coach Mauricio Pochettino, who built a formidable side that challenged for Premier League and Champions League titles.

Spurs came close to winning the league, especially in the 2015-16 season, and reached the Champions League final in 2018-19, only to lose to Liverpool, and Wanyama feels disappointed that the team did not lift any piece of silverware.

South African legend Benni McCarthy has reportedly decided on the men who will join his technical bench when he takes over as Harambee Stars coach.

“It was a great time in North London. I moved to a big team that always challenged to qualify for the Champions League and it was definitely a huge challenge. I experienced some of my best football there,” Wanyama told Telecomasia.net.

“We had such a good team and up to today, it remains unbelievable for me that we never won the Premier League or anything with that group. There was a lot of talent around and the chemistry we had was unmatched.”

Wanyama says working with Pochettino was a bonus as the tactician understood how best to utilise him following their time together at Southampton, which contributed to his great displays in North London.

'Maybe it will never happen now' - Usain Bolt reveals 'biggest regret' of his career as once-in-a-lifetime opportunity missed

Usain Bolt has finally explained his biggest career regret after retiring in 2017.

“Yeah, we understood each other really well and it made it a bit more comfortable for me. But other than that, when you go to a big team, you have to work so hard to remain there. Having someone who understands you and knows your strengths only makes the load lighter, but you have to put in the work,” he added.

In his three-and-a-half spell in North London, Tottenham faced bitter rivals Arsenal eight times, winning three, drawing as many while losing two, a period which he enjoyed the most besides their run to the Champions League final.

“Definitely reaching the Champions League final. It was a shame we couldn’t go on to win it but reaching the final was a huge moment for the club,” he said.

“Also, beating Arsenal in several North London derbies was a high moment for me. We were always on top of them and it was great for us and our fans. It would bring a lot of joy.”

Wanyama left Tottenham in March 2020 to join MLS club CF Montreal where he played for nearly five years before leaving in November 2024 at the expiry of his contract.

The 33-year-old is currently weighing his options after receiving a number of offers although he appears not keen to return to England.
