President William Ruto has revealed the details of his meeting with United Nations (UN) Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed at State House Mombasa.
In a statement on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Ruto said they discussed issues on regional and global peace and stability.
“Kenya values its strong partnership with the United Nations in promoting global peace, security, and sustainable development – key to addressing both global and regional challenges,” Ruto stated.
Among the issues discussed include security situation in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the progress made so far.
“At State House, Mombasa, I had a productive discussion with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed on regional and global peace and stability. We reviewed the situation in Eastern DRC and the significant progress made by the EAC-SADC joint peace process, including the appointment of facilitators to guide peace efforts and subsequent measures to restore stability,” Ruto added.
This comes days after former President Uhuru Kenyatta was nominated among African leaders who will spearhead peace talks in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Uhuru will work alongside former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn Bosh as facilitators of the EAC-SADC peace process (the merged Luanda and Nairobi processes) in Eastern DRC.
Ruto says that during the meeting, they discussed the conflict in Sudan and the security crisis in Haiti and the UN’s support in addressing it.
“We also addressed the tragic conflict in Sudan and the urgent need to pursue all opportunities for dialogue and peaceful resolution. Additionally, we discussed the security crisis in Haiti and the UN’s support in addressing it. I expressed my gratitude for the United Nations’ commitment to assisting Kenya in leading the Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission,” Ruto stated.
