Police in Thika have netted over 265 kilograms of bhang valued at over Sh5 million in Kiganjo Estate during the weekend.
Thika Sub County Police Commander Lawrence Muchangi said, working closely with members of the community policing, they managed to seize the narcotic drug which had been packed in eight gunny bags and loaded in a personal vehicle on Friday night.
Muchangi said three suspects who were aboard the vehicle managed to escape after they were confronted by the police.
“Police on patrol spotted a vehicle that was packed by the roadside in the estate while dropping the gunny bags. Upon getting close, the occupants of the vehicle fled leaving behind the consignment.
“This made the police suspicious and after inspection, they realized the vehicle was loaded with bhang. We impounded the vehicle and the drug and moved them to the nearby Kimuchu police post,” said Muchangi.
He said they suspected a famous bhang trafficker in the area who has been on the police watchlist and that he has been arrested multiple times but unfortunately has always been successful in securing release from custody through bonds only to continue as the key supplier of bhang in the region.
“Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and we are urging members of the public to provide any information on his whereabouts. He cannot escape. We also urge the courts not to be lenient when releasing such criminals on bail,” Muchangi said.
The impounded vehicle is currently being held at Kimuchu Police post as investigations continue.
