Benni McCarthy to name former team-mate as part of Harambee Stars coaching staff

South African legend Benni McCarthy will reportedly include one of his former team-mates on his technical bench at Harambee Stars.

South African legend Benni McCarthy has reportedly decided to include his ex-team-mate Moeneeb Josephs into his backroom staff at Harambee Stars.

McCarthy’s appointment is drawing closer, with reports saying he will arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday before he is unveiled on Friday, to begin work with two 2026 World Cup qualifiers scheduled in March set to be his first assignment.

The former South Africa striker has also agreed on the composition of his backroom staff with some local coaches set to join him and he will also come with his own picks, who include former South Africa goalkeeper Josephs, who played with him at Orlando Pirates.

South African legend Benni McCarthy has been heavily linked with the Harambee Stars job and here is everything you need to know about the former Bafana Bafana striker.

Josephs is a Pirates legend who played for the South African giants from 2008-2013 and linked up with McCarthy when the striker returned home in 2011 and played for the Buccaneers for two seasons, winning the league in 2011-12, their last title, as well as the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout.

“Moeneeb Josephs will join Benni McCarthy in Kenya as the goalkeeper coach of the Kenya national football team,” South African outlet SoccerBeat posted on social media.

SoccerBeat is an authority on the matter since Josephs offers regular insights on South African football on the platform while he is also close with McCarthy.

It means Josephs will be tasked with tuning Harambee Stars goalkeepers, an area that Kenya has struggled in in recent years, with former coach Engin Firat alternating between Patrick Matasi and Bryne Omondi.

Interim coach Francis Kimanzi also offered opportunities to Farouk Shikalo during the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar in January which shows that the position is still yet to be nailed down by anyone.

It is still not clear who among the local coaches will join McCarthy’s backroom staff with the former Cape Town City, AmaZulu and Manchester United coach believed to have agreed a two-year contract.
