Esau Kemboi and Amon Kiptoo will highlight the Kenyan team to the 2025 half marathon in Spain.
Esau Kemboi and Amon Kiptoo will lead the Kenyan contingent to compete in the 2025 Granollers-La Garriga Half marathon with the intention of breaking the course record set by the late Samuel Wanjiru.
Wanjiru, who lost his life in unclear circumstances in 2011, set a course record of 58:55 seconds in 2008 in the half marathon that is recognized by the World Athletics. This year’s edition is set for March 2.

The mark stood for over 10 years before it was lowered to 58:55 by Ethiopia’s Hagos Hebrehivet in 2023.

Since Wanjiru’s monstrous performance, the only other Kenyan runner who came closer to smashing the record was Abraham Kiptum. Kiptum clocked an impressive time of 59:58 in the 2019 edition in the streets of Granollers.
The responsibility to reclaim Wanjiru’s record in this year’s edition lies on Kiptoo and Kemboi, who are among the fastest entries confirmed by the organizers so far.

Kiptoo heads to Spain with a personal best of 1:01:30 which he set on April 7, 2024 in Madrid. On the other hand, Kemboi boasts a lifetime best of 1:01:50 that was achieved in Kenya’s capital City Nairobi.
