FKF to announce new Harambee Stars coach ‘in the coming days’ amid strong Benni McCarthy links

FKF President Hussein Mohammed has revealed when the next Harambee Stars coach will be appointed amid reports Benni McCarthy is set to fly to Nairobi.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has confirmed that Harambee Stars will soon have a new head coach, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.

The confirmation comes amid strong speculation linking former Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy to the job.

Speaking to the media on Friday after Harambee Starlets’ 0-0 draw with Tunisia, Mohammed responded to a question by Pulse Sports, stating, “Very soon in the next coming days, we will make that announcement.”

South African legend Benni McCarthy has been heavily linked with the Harambee Stars job and here is everything you need to know about the former Bafana Bafana striker.

The South African tactician was identified as the preferred candidate for the national team job last December, but the process of formalising his appointment has taken longer than expected.

Earlier this year, Mohammed assured fans that FKF was committed to securing the best possible candidate for the role.

“FKF is working to appoint a substantive coach and a competent technical bench to help us achieve our objectives. That’s why the current technical bench was appointed on an interim basis. We will provide an update on the new coach once all the details are finalized,” he told The Nation.

The FKF boss also highlighted the importance of making the right appointment, given the federation’s financial struggles with past coaches.

“We have had issues with paying coaches in the past, and we don’t want to repeat those mistakes,” he noted.

According to Mozzart Sport, the wait is nearly over, with McCarthy expected to land in Nairobi midweek and his unveiling scheduled for the end of the week. A source within FKF disclosed that all preparations for the former South Africa international’s arrival had been finalised.

“He is flying to Nairobi this coming Wednesday. Everything regarding his appointment has been completed, and we have tentatively scheduled his unveiling for Friday,” the source revealed.

McCarthy’s appointment comes at a crucial time as Kenya prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon. His immediate task will be assembling and preparing the national team for the critical fixtures.

Uncertainty remains over whether McCarthy will also oversee Kenya’s CHAN campaign in August or if local coaches will be entrusted with that responsibility. However, FKF’s immediate priority is the March international break and ensuring the new coach settles in quickly.

McCarthy, who was part of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at Manchester United, is renowned for his attacking philosophy and experience as both a player and coach. His appointment could mark a new era for Harambee Stars as they seek to make an impact on the international stage.
