Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezekiel Mutua has urged Kenyans to stop speaking ill of the dead.

Taking to his official X account on Saturday, February 22, 2025, Mutua argued that a section of Kenyans have become morally bankrupt to the point of wishing the dead death even when they are already dead.

Mutua pointed out an incident in which Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa was interrupted at an event while passing his message of condolence following the death of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Mutua criticizes Kenyans

The former Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) boss says he was disappointed to see a section of Kenyans at the event tell off Wamalwa with the “wacha akufe tu” chants when he told the audience that Kenya had lost the former IEBC boss.

“How did we become so morally bankrupt to the point of speaking ill of the dead, to hate people to the point of wishing them death even when they are dead? I came across the unfortunate comments at the function attended by former CS Eugene Wamalwa, who was interrupted with chants of “Wacha akufe tu” when he mentioned that we had lost former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati. Have we lost our humanity? How shall we ever regain it as a country?” Mutua stated.

Mourning Chebukati

Chebukati’s death has attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans. Whilst Kenyans and political leaders have mourned him as a leader who upheld integrity, a section of Kenyans have said unprintable words against Chebukati.

President William Ruto on Friday, February 21, 2025, led Kenyans in mourning Chebukati, terming him a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” Ruto stated.

Chebukati’s death

Chebukati passed on on Friday, February 21, 2025, at a Nairobi hospital, as confirmed by family.

Prior to his death, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Nairobi hospital, but what he was ailing from remained private.

He had been undergoing treatment at home and was taken to the hospital after the situation got dire.

Chebukati, a seasoned lawyer, served as IEBC Chairman from January 2017 to January 2023, a period marked by high-profile court challenges and complex political dynamics.
