Exeter City have been hit with controversy as one of their players faces legal trouble, raising concerns about the club’s discipline.
Exeter City defender Ilmari Niskanen has been charged with drink driving following an incident on the A30 near Honiton, Devon, on 6 February, police have confirmed.
The Finnish international, who plays alongside Kenyan defender Vincent Harper at the English League One club, is set to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on 24 February.
Devon and Cornwall Police stated that Niskanen had been bailed pending his court appearance.

Shelly-Ann-Fraser-Pryce will go down as perhaps the greatest female sprinter of all time, but what does she eat that has played a key role in creating her legendary career?
The Grecians have acknowledged the charge, describing the matter as being treated “with the utmost gravity.”
Niskanen himself issued a public statement expressing deep regret over the incident.
“I recently made a very serious and bad mistake. A mistake that nobody should ever do, least of all a person who should be a role model to others. I am terribly sorry and fully regret my actions. I deeply regret the impact they may have on our club, my teammates, and our supporters both here in Exeter and back home in Finland,” Niskanen said in a statement published on the club’s portal.
The 26-year-old continued, “I’m very grateful that my actions that night did not impact any other people but know that even risking something happening to someone else is thoughtless and wrong. I will take full responsibility and deal with all the possible consequences. I know I have let all of you down, but I will do everything in my power to make things right and I am committed to making amends in every way possible.”

Usain Bolt has expressed disappointment in Yohan Blake and others for failing to follow Coach Glen Mills’ guidance, which led to their struggles.
The news comes as a blow to Exeter City, who are battling for a strong finish in the League One season. The club, currently in mid-table, relies heavily on squad discipline and cohesion. Niskanen’s charge could be a significant distraction at a crucial point in their campaign.
Niskanen, who has represented Finland 23 times, joined Exeter City in August 2024 and has since made 69 appearances for the club, scoring one goal. His most recent match came just days after the alleged offence, when Exeter defeated Cambridge United 1-0.
His teammate, Kenyan left-back Vincent Harper, has also been a key figure for the club. The 24-year-old defender has played an instrumental role in Exeter’s backline, making several key performances this season.
Exeter City fans have reacted with disappointment, with many expressing concerns over how the club will handle the situation. The club has not yet disclosed whether Niskanen will face internal disciplinary action.
Some supporters took to social media to express their views, with many condemning Niskanen’s actions while also hoping that the situation does not affect the club’s performance.
