Kenyan marathoner’s ex-husband battles for Sh70 million wealth in explosive divorce war

Lucy Kabuu has been locked in a bitter court battle with ex-husband Jeremiah Maina over Sh70 million wealth, alleging property mismanagement.

Divorce cases can turn ugly, and for former Kenyan marathon star Lucy Kabuu and her ex-husband Jeremiah Maina Kamungu, the battle over Sh70 million in disputed wealth is a bitter war still being fought in court.

Despite their marriage being legally dissolved in 2020, the estranged couple remains locked in a protracted legal dispute over properties they once shared.

Maina, who was both Kabuu’s husband and coach, claims he played a crucial role in her rise to international stardom and in acquiring their wealth, but Kabuu insists she built her fortune on her own.

The matter escalated when Kabuu accused  Maina of defying a court order by illegally selling some of their assets and collecting rent from tenants without depositing it into the court’s designated bank account.

She alleges that he misused his access to their properties, particularly in Nyahururu, where he is said to have instructed tenants to remit rent directly to him, contrary to the court’s directive.

“The plaintiff/respondent took his role very seriously as the trainer of the defendant that led to her excelling in her craft and winning various accolades,”  Maina stated in his court filings as quoted by Nation.

Usain Bolt has expressed disappointment in Yohan Blake and others for failing to follow Coach Glen Mills’ guidance, which led to their struggles.

He argues that without his guidance, she would not have achieved the success she enjoyed on the international stage.

Beyond his role as a coach,  Maina claims to have financially contributed to the couple’s investments, making it unfair for Kabuu to seek full ownership of their properties.

He insists that he has not violated any court orders, maintaining that the sales in question occurred before the court issued any prohibitions.

Furthermore, he accuses Kabuu of deliberately delaying the case to continue benefiting from the disputed wealth.

“The application is in bad faith, based on half-truths and therefore a waste of the court’s time. The court should cite her for contempt which she has admitted to,” he argued, adding that the case has dragged on unnecessarily for 11 years.

However, Kabuu stands firm on her claims that she single-handedly built her wealth through her career winnings, including her gold medal victory in the 2006 Commonwealth Games 10,000 meters race.

She asserts that Mr. Maina’s involvement was limited to coaching and that he had no claim over the financial fruits of her labor.

The acrimonious legal battle began in 2014 when the couple separated, and despite the formal end of their marriage in 2020, the division of assets remains unresolved.

Kabuu is pushing for complete control over the wealth, while Maina demands an equal share, citing both his coaching role and financial contributions.
