Jasmine Camacho-Quinn has reflected on her struggles during the 2024 season, admitting she wasn’t at her best after losing to Masai Russell, and is determined to redeem herself in 2025.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn has opened up about the turbulent 2024 season that saw her fail to defend her Olympic title, losing to Masai Russel in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The world 100m hurdles silver medallist revealed that she had not taken a break since winning the Olympic title at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and was under pressure to defend her title.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn pointed out that going to the Diamond League Meetings in China, she did not care about her performance and all that mattered to her was crossing the finish line.

However, she managed to win both races, competing in Xiamen and Shanghai before tasting her first loss of the season at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix where she ended up finishing a distant fourth.

“Mentally tapped out…I’m not even going to lie. I wasn’t there when we went to the China Diamond Leagues and in my head, I was like if I win, I win and if I lose, who cares?” Jasmine Camacho-Quinn said on the Ready Set Go podcast.

“That’s not me and the fact that that was my mindset for the longest time, I was just like, ‘What’s about to happen?’ The route I was headed down, I probably wouldn’t even have made the Olympic final.”

“It wasn’t really until the end of May when I just started crying and John was like, ‘What’s going on?’ but I was just not there and I didn’t know what it was,” Jasmine Camacho-Quinn revealed.

“I think from there, that’s when it kind of switched up for me and it was around 10 or 11 weeks before the Olympics. I had to make something switch and I was not in top shape but I got to the Olympics and I’m grateful.”

After crossing the finish line third at the Paris Olympic Games, Jasmine was quite excited since it was not something she expected. However, she admitted to being a bit upset.

The Puerto Rican revealed that she had not given her all and managed to round up the podium. It was a motivation for her to show up fully in the 2025 season.

Masai Russell claimed top honours in 12.33 seconds as Cyrena Samba-Mayela and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn came in second and third in respective times of 12.34 and 12.36 seconds.

“It was normal for me to be mad because who wants to lose but the fact that I wasn’t in top shape and I still managed to grab a medal I had to ask myself if I gave 100%,” she said.

With the 2025 season having started, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn wants to make up for all the losses she had in 2024. Her main focus will be on the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Some of her track rivals including Ackera Nugent and Masai Russell have already started their campaigns, clocking impressive times in their indoor races.
