Ruto leads an unusual meeting about DRC status
On Wednesday, January 29, an unusual summit was convened to address the escalating conflict in the eastern DRC. Ruto chaired the online conference in Egypt for a government visit, in his post as chairman of EAC.
The conference was attended by six other leaders from the EAC region, including Samia Suluhu (Tanzania), Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (Uganda), Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud (Somalia), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Salva Kiir Mayardit (South Sudan), and Evariste (Burundi).
DRC President Felix Tshisekedi was not there.
According to a statement issued by the EAC Secretariat, the meeting aimed to seek a peaceful solution to the Eastern DRC's dispute. The meeting has called on the rival parties to stop the violence and agree to stop the fighting immediately.
Concerns emerged about the poor security situation in the eastern DRC, which has led to the loss of the lives of several people, humanitarian conflicts, and severe suffering, especially among women and children. The leaders also emphasized the need to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the affected people.
The DRC's authorities were encouraged to involve all relevant stakeholders, including the M23 rebels and other armed groups with complaints, to facilitate negotiations and end the conflict.
In response to attacks on diplomatic delegation, ambassador, and staff in Kinshasa, the DRC government was encouraged to ensure the safety and security of diplomatic assets and workers.

Is Tshisekedi ignoring Ruto?
Tshisekedi swept the EAC high rally convened by Ruto to address the DRC conflict, citing conflict planning, though he attended a separate SADC meeting.
Again, Tshisekedi ignored a joint meeting of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) held in Dar es Salaam, under the chairmanship of Ruto, deciding to send Prime Minister Judith Suminwa instead.
