How parliamentary salaries increased when the flashes began to move
“My first salary as a member of Parliament was Ksh 19,000 and a few hundred, less than Ksh 20,000. that privileges were three times the salary, ” Karua said.
The veteran politician explained more about how parliamentary salaries have increased over the years:
- The first five years (1993 – 1997): salaries increased to between KSh 50,000 and KSh 70,000.
- By the end of his second term: MPs were earning KSh 100,000.
- After passing the Oloo Aringo bill: salaries rapidly rose to KSh 350,000.
- Before the next Parliament: MPs increased their salaries again to Ksh 600,000.
Karua criticized the tendency of the incumbent MPs to increase wages, saying the increase in salaries should be implemented in the next parliamentary term rather than the benefit of those in the office at the time.
Cause of Karua to stop private business
The former Gichugu MP revealed that due to huge financial benefits, MPs needed to be full -time executives, which led to those who had private business, like him, to close them.
“We needed to be full -time MPs, so people with private business like me left it. I had no problem closing my business because KSh 600,000 was enough. And this time, I was a minister, so I was getting extra money, ” He explained.
MPs focused more on bids than legislative work
Karua complained that the role of parliamentary oversight had been temporarily reduced, with many MPs putting in place personal business interests rather than legislative responsibilities.
“MPs are bidders. We do not even see people attending sessions when there are important debates. They are just looking for a search. ” He said.
He also revealed that his opposition to wage increases was deliberately sent to foreign trips to ensure that complex salary bills could pass.
“As I served, I opposed any argument to extend myself to the same time, the legislators who were plotting to increase the salary went to the Speaker and arranged for a trip to the bill to pass,” Karua revealed.
