Ethiopia’s Berihu Aregawi will be looking to challenge Jacob Kiplimo’s world half marathon record as he makes his debut in Lisbon on March 9.
Jacob Kiplimo set the world record on Sunday, competing at the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks where he clocked 56:42 to cross the finish line.
He took back the world record after it was snatched from him at the Valencia Half Marathon by Yomif Kejelcha who timed 57:30.

Now, Kejelcha’s compatriot has achieved a lot of milestones in the 5km and 10km road races and he believes it is high to step up and see what he can accomplish over the half marathon.
He is the world record-holder in the 5km and the third-fastest athlete ever in the 10km, making him a potential threat as he switches to the 21km race.
“I’m excited to announce that I will make my debut in the distance on March 9 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon. I’ve trained well over the past few months to prepare for this race, and I can’t wait to run fast,” Berihu Aregawi told the event organisers.
Marathon world record holder Ruth Chepng’etich was announced as the headliner of the women’s field and the event organisers have now officially announced Berihu Aregawi as the star of the men’s elite field.
He enjoyed the 2024 season, having won a silver medal in the tight 10,000m race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Adding to his Olympic silver medal in Paris, Berihu Aregawi also finished fourth in the 10,000m at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
