‘He’ll give it a red-hot crack’

Gout Gout manager explains what to expect from the Australian teen sensation in April.

Gout Gout manager James Templeton has challenged the Australian teenage sprint sensation to fire on all cylinders this year, starting with the Stawell Gift event in April.

The famous 120-metre handicap event will be held on Easter Monday and will see 17-year-old Gout feature as part the main events at the 143rd edition of the race.

Templeton said Gou Gout will use the Stawell event as part of his preparations for this year’s major championships, especially with the World Championships on the horizon.

South African legend Benni McCarthy has been heavily linked with the Harambee Stars job and here is everything you need to know about the former Bafana Bafana striker.

In a recent interview with Weekend Grandstand, Templeton said: “The way Gout runs coming through the field and having that flying last 50, it was suggested to me [he could run] by a couple of local Stawell people I know. We had a chat about it and I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great?’

“You never know, he could be handicapped out of it. That’s always a possibility. But it’s going to be fun watching him run. He’ll give it a red-hot crack of course.”

Gout Gout is back to Australia after spending time honing his skills in the USA alongside Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles, under the leadership of the detail-oriented Lance Brauman.

Gout Gout came to the spotlight in 2024 thanks to a wind-assisted 10.04 hundred at the Australian All-Schools Championships in Brisbane in December, where he also broke Peter Norman’s 56-year-old Australian 200m record.

With Brisbane Games set for 2032, Templeton reckons that the LA2028 Games could be the ideal stage when the world will see the real talent of Gout.

“I’ve said all along, wouldn’t it be great if by the time the Olympics come in LA in 2028 that Australia is behind him and the Australian sporting public is saying, ‘When is our guy running?’ and Australia knows we’ve got a guy who has a genuine shot.”

Gout was born in Ipswich, Queensland to parents from South Sudan who moved to Australia two years before he was born. According to Gout’s father Bona, when he and his wife Monica fled South Sudan for Egypt, before moving to Australia, the family name was misspelled during translation from Arabic.

The proper spelling should be Guot, though Australian records have not been corrected. Thus, Gout remains his official name.
