‘Their future is secured’- Barnaba Korir urges calm amid family dispute over late Kelvin Kiptum’s affairs

Barnaba Korir has reassured that Kelvin Kiptum’s family’s future is secure while urging the public to avoid speculation and let them mourn in peace.

Athletics Kenya Nairobi Region chair Barnaba Korir has weighed in on the ongoing conflict between Kelvin Kiptum’s parents, his wife and his management.

The parents accused the athlete’s management company and agent of withholding money and abandoning them, noting that they have struggled financially and affording basic needs has now become a challenge since Kelvin Kiptum’s death among other issues.

However, Barnaba Korir has clarified that people are so quick to point fingers on social media without knowing what is going on behind closed doors.

World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum’s family has been divided since his death one year ago and it has now emerged that the division has led to a freezing of his millions.


The Kip Keino Classic meet director urged the media and everyone to let Kiptum’s parents and his wife, Asenath Rotich mourn in peace since healing is not a linear path and he might have emotional outbursts from time to time.

Korir explained that their future is secured, from the kids to the parents since the people handling their wealth are of very high standard.

“There are those other things that came about on social media and as I indicated before, we always jump into conclusions without knowing the real story. People don’t have the real facts and at least I have a preview of what it is,” Barnaba Korir said in an interview with Athletics TV.

“Despite what you see, it is better to allow him to continue mourning, it will take time and after sometime, he will accept.

“I can assure you is that their security is guaranteed (kids, parents and wife) because the people who need to cater for their affairs are of a respectable character and their future is secured.”

Barnaba Korir further noted that Kiptum’s death left behind a lot of questions than answers and it will take time before the world moves on.

He pointed out that he was young and his star was destined to shine brighter but such is life and his family and fans have no choice but to try and move on.

“His death was the most unfortunate thing that happened because that thing is very bitter because we don’t where he could have been or what he could have done. It would always be seen as what could he have done if he lived,” Korir added.

“He passed on when he was still young and everyone was looking forward to seeing him run in under two hours. He was a friend of mine, a very nice and jovial guy and we really feel sad about it.

“There are some things that you can never control when they happen and that’s the nature of life. It is very difficult for the parents, wife and children as they try to conceptualise what really happened, it will take years.”

Meanwhile, the late Kelvin Kiptum lost his life in a car crash on February 11, 2024. He was driving with his coach Gervais Hakizimana when they met their untimely death in Kaptagat.
